On May 4, 2020 6 students from ENSEA started the first online internship at Ural Federal University
In the beginning of May 2020 French students started their online internship “Machine learning in Power Industry”. Initially, the internship was planned to take place in Ural Federal University and students were expected to arrive to Ekaterinburg in May. However, due to COVID-19 situation and closure of borders the ENSEA students couldn`t come. Luckily, after discussion with lecturers, the students and ENSEA representatives the Department of International Educational Programs made a decision to carry out Internship online.
On May 4, 2020 the group had the first meeting with the heads of the Course Alexandra Khalyasmaa and Stanislav Eroshenko who showed the outline of the course and organized a meeting with Anton Tugolukov - the Strategic Partner Development Director of the industrial partner SVEL, which will be the key company to provide cases for project realization. The meeting was also attended by the Deputy Director of the Department of International Programs UrFU Maria Mukoseeva. On behalf of ENSEA the meeting was attended by the Head of International Relations Thomas Tang and the Manager of International Relations Stephanie Flint Luh.
“I am very grateful to UrFU and the Projects organizers for not cancelling the Internship and moving this course online”, says Stephanie.
Students are having intensive work: during the first month of the internship they had daily classes in Machine Learning for Power Industry delivered by Alexandra Khalyasmaa and Stanislav Eroshenko and Programming Language Python delivered by Alexander Bersenev. In addition, students have weekly meetings on Project realization and even online industry visits to SVEL and Ural Power Industry Museum. The third month of the Internship will be dedicated to working on the projects and writing joint articles based on the results of the internship.
Apart of the studies, the Department of International Educational Programs decided not to give up on culture activities and together with the volunteers organizes Speaking Clubs, Culinary Workshops and Online Tours for the students to practice English and learn more about Russian culture.
“For me and Stanislav, this is a new experience of remote project work not only with the foreign students, but also with the team of the organizers from UrFU and with the industry partner SVEL. Despite some difficulties, this form of training also has many advantages: we learned how to provide lecturing and conduct excursions from various industry sites online. Moreover, the course was expanded greatly due to the additional content that was created for such specific circumstances, the flexibility of the online schedule allowed us to adapt the program to all the internship participants, even with significant local time difference”, comments Alexandra Khalyasmaa.
Based on the feedback from the students and lecturers the Department of International Educational Programs is planning to implement project-learning online in other Internship Projects in future.
