How to stay warm in Winter
Weather in Urals can be very unpredictable, the temperature may vary from -5C to -25C and you might not know the exact weather forecast in Ekaterinburg until the day of your arrival.
However, we can say one thing for sure! The temperature will be below 0, so in any case you will have to be well prepared. -25C may sound scary and freezing, but as long as you are dressed properly, you will be just fine.
To make your preparations for Winter University easier, we came up with some tips for you!
Tip 1. No head without a hat.
Hat is the most important winter item and essential for survival. Winter ear-muffs may look stylish, but won`t protect you from the wind and low temperature, hood is also useless on its own.
Woolen hat is the best option, or you can also get yourself “Ushanka” (a hat with long ears) in Ekaterinburg, it will be a great souvenir as well.
Tip 2. The longer, the warmer.
Winter jackets or coats are essential at this time of the year, but thicker doesn`t always mean warmer. However, if you could find a long model – you won`t regret it. Better if it at least covers your lover body, even for the guys. We advise you to check second-hand stores in your countries (maybe somebody visited Russia and doesn`t use it anymore).
One more advice when you choose winter jacket is to buy it in a bigger size, so you can put some extra layers underneath and still will be able to move, at least it shouldn`t be tight. Oh yeah, the hood is also a "+"!
Tip 3. Think of a cabbage.
Here is a riddle for you: “There is a pretty lady in dozens of layers”. And the answer is a Cabbage!
Thick clothes won`t make you warm, but several layers will do the job. Wear several tank tops or base layers and underpants too. The good thing is, that you can take off some layers in the classroom, because there we have heating.
The same tip applies to socks, several warm pairs of those are essential to have and can be used all together as well.
Tip 4. The scarf trick.
Sometimes winter makes you feel down with lack of colours.
But, you can turn it around by adding some! One of the best bright solutions is scarf; it comes in different colours and length and can be used as a head wrap or snugget. Nothing makes winter cosier than scarf.
Tip 5. Ice-skating is for the courts, not for the streets.
With constant weather changes the roads in the lovely city E can get very slippery and if you won`t attend winter sport program – you may not know what to do.
Well, to avoid unexpected falls and slides we advise you to think of getting boots. Not sneakers, taсkies, trainers or gumshoes – we talk about BOOTS with a solid sole. It won`t only keep you in a vertical position, but also will keep your feet warm. Fur inside is also pleasant addition to thick sole.
The other fun option is “Valenki” (made of wool felt), again memorable souvenir to bring home. Also, puffy high boots look really nice! And again, extra size gives extra space for the socks).
Tip 6. Gloves (how else will you play snowballs?!)
Yes, gloves are important not only to perform winter activities but just protect your hands from cold.
Don`t buy expensive gloves, because those are the thing that people lose the most during winter.
Tip 7. Face winter cream and lip balm.
Not only for the ladies, but for the gents too. Winter cream takes care of your skin and protects it from frostbites.
The Nivea winter edition can be a good and cheaper option that you can easily find in the markets or chemist`s once you arrive.
Tip 8. Phones don`t like winter.
Especially iPhones. If you use it outside in winter for more than 10 minutes, it plays cruel tricks with you: it goes off and shows that the battery is finished, even if 10 minutes ago you had it fully charged.
Our advice is to carry power bank with you so you can quickly plug it in and reanimate. Also, go to the warmer place and wait for few minutes to warm up your device.
Tip 9. Stay warm inside.
How to do that? Drink tea, hot tea with slice of lemon.
Thermo-cups is the best invention for winter. It will keep you warm during lessons and walks. Don`t worry, our classrooms are warm enough, so maybe grab a pair of shorts too!
Winter is magnificent time of the year! You just need to stay active and have fun, - we will provide you with both.
See you soon within the walls of our University.
